This is the part that actually changes the job, and it is why Oconee County gets its own page rather than a line in a list of towns.
Athens has a canopy ordinance. Oconee County does not (Oconee County). Where Athens-Clarke County asks whether a tree is protected and whether its removal criteria are met, Oconee County's rules come at trees from three other directions:
- Timber harvesting. Cutting timber on a scale that counts as a harvest needs a permit, issued by the Georgia Forestry Commission and forwarded to the county. A homeowner taking down a dead pine is not harvesting timber. A landowner clearing a wooded tract might be.
- Landscaping and buffer standards. Trees that a development was required to plant or keep, and trees inside a required buffer, cannot simply be removed without replanting. If your subdivision is newer, ask before you assume a tree at the edge of the lot is yours to take.
- Land-disturbance permitting. Once a job involves moving earth as well as cutting trees, it is a permitted activity, and a tree crew is no longer the right contractor for it.
For the ordinary case, a tree on a house lot in Watkinsville, Bishop, or Bogart, none of the three usually applies, and the job is quoted and done like any other. We check which side of those lines a job falls on before we quote, because getting it wrong is expensive for you, not for us, and we will say plainly when a job has moved from tree work into something that needs a permit or a different trade.

When to prune in Oconee County
The same as in Athens. University of Georgia Extension points to the dormant winter season, roughly January into early March before spring growth starts, for most trees and shrubs, with spring-flowering plants pruned after they finish flowering (UGA Extension). Dead, broken, and hanging limbs do not wait for a season.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Oconee County?
For an ordinary tree on a residential lot, usually not, because Oconee County does not run a canopy ordinance like Athens-Clarke County's. Larger clearing, timber harvest, and removal tied to a development's landscaping or buffer requirements are different, and those go through the county and the Georgia Forestry Commission.
